GOLD RIVER, Calif. – Humboldt State rowing got off to a great start garnering one first, three seconds, two thirds and four fourth place finishes on Lake Natoma, Saturday, to kickoff its 2010 season.

The Jacks' lone first place finish came in the Novice Four race. HSU finished with a time of 8:33.3 with host Sacramento State coming in second at 8:52.8.

Two of HSU’s second places also came from the Novice.  The Novice Eight finished in a time 7:30.6 behind Sac State’s 7:23.8 and the Second Novice Eight were 24.0 seconds behind Sac State’s 7:45.1 with a 8:09.1. The Jacks also finished third in the race with an 8:15.1. The Varsity Lightweight Four had a time of 9:03.8, 12.8 seconds behind Sac State.

The Second Varsity Eight came in in 7:47.5 behind both Sacramento State, 7:02.6, and Saint Mary’s in 7:41.4.

The Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight “A” and “B” and Second Varsity Four all finished in fourth in their races and the Varsity Four came in in sixth place.

"The amount of time we put between ourselves and UC San Diego supports that we should be ranked in the region,” head coach Robin Meiggs said.  “We were concerned, going in, that we were going to be slow, but all of our rowers really responded.

"This was a very good start to prepare us for the real racing that we're going to experience during April."
