Bookmark and Share
DAVIS — Humboldt State freshman Laura Tesch continued her rapid ascent on the Jacks' record book with a clearance of 5 feet, 4 1/4 inches at Saturday's Aggie Open, moving her up to No. 2 on HSU all-time list. That clearance was good enough for third place on Saturday and is only 1 3/4 inches shy of the NCAA provisional mark.

Also threatening to achieve an NCAA qualifier in the women's shot put was the Jacks' Heather Snyder, who placed third among 18 competitors with a heave of 43-1 1/2. That toss is only 4 1/2 inches shy of the provisional standard.

On the track, Humboldt State's Nick LaPlant and Niko Arguelles raced fast times in their first 800-meter competition of the year, and Megan Rolland highlighted the Jacks' women's efforts with a second-place finish in the 5,000 meters.

LaPlant was timed in 1 minute, 56.20 seconds and Arguelles clocked 1:57.95, placing 4th and 5th, respectively, in the 24-runner field. Distance standout Austin Huff also provided a highlight for HSU, placing second in the field of 21 runners in the men's 5,000 meters with a time of 15:05.29.

Rolland also opened her competitive season with a time of  17:48.41 in the women's 5K, taking second behind University of San Francisco's Heather Zytkewicz. The Jacks' senior was only 15 seconds off the provisional qualifying time for the NCAA Division II Championships.

Helena Silva continued her impressive early efforts, placing fourth among 24 athletes in the javelin with a toss of 116-6. Senior pole vaulter improved upon her season-best with a clearance of 10-11 3/4 in her specialty.

Humboldt State continues its season Saturday, traveling to Eugene, Ore. for the Oregon Invitational.
