ARCATA – The Humboldt State women’s basketball team (14-4, 12-2 CCAA) open their final regular season home stand this week with two California Collegiate Athletic Association games.
On Thursday, Feb. 4, the Jacks welcome the Gators of San Francisco State in a 5:30 p.m. tip-off. On Saturday, Feb. 6, the Jacks host the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters in a 4:30 p.m. tip-off.

Mathers describes the action from Lumberjack Arena and HSU Assistant Athletic Director Dan Pambianco goes on the road with the Jacks. … Audio is also streamed live over the Internet through the hsujacks.com web site. Head-To-Head
This will be the 56th time the Jacks and SFSU have met. The Gators hold a 30-25 lead all-time. HSU won the last match-up, a 50-49 thriller in San Francisco on Jan. 3, and has taken six of seven games the teams have played as CCAA opponents. The schools first met in 1974-75 in the NorCal Regional. SFSU won the game 50-49 and then ran off 16 more wins over HSU before the Jacks finally broke through, a 68-62 win, in the 1984-85 season. The Lumberjacks and Gators have been member’s three conferences at the same time: The Golden State Conference, the Northern California Athletic Conference and currently the CCAA. … The Lumberjacks lead the all-time series 8-1 versus Cal State Monterey Bay. Humboldt State has won the last five meetings and six of seven since they joined the CCAA in the 2006-07 season. The last meeting, on Jan. 2, was a 65-57 HSU victory in Seaside. The two sides first faced off in the 2001-02 season, a 72-43 Jacks win. In its eight wins, HSU is averaging 79 points per game while giving up just 55 for an average margin of victory of 24 points. The lone loss came in the 2006-07 season, a 77-67 final in Seaside.

At 14-4 overall and 12-2 in conference action, HSU is in second place in the CCAA just half a game back of UC San Diego. Last week the Jacks swept a pair of road games. On Friday HSU defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills 74-69 in Carson. On Saturday, in Los Angeles, they downed Cal State Los Angeles 69-52. The wins completed season sweeps of both teams by the Lumberjacks. … The win at CSULA was the 100th of head coach Joddie Gleason’s collegiate career. She is the second HSU women’s basketball coach to reach the plateau. Pam Martin, who coached the Jacks from 1988-2001, got her 100th win in her 195th game and finished her tenure at HSU with a 169-195 record. Gleason did it in just her 160th game. Her record is now 100-60. … The Jacks have the second-leading offense in the CCAA, averaging 70.6 points per game. They are second in field goal percentage (.414) and lead in 3-point shooting at .346. HSU is outscoring opponents by 9.3 points per game and outshooting them .414 to .363 percent. ... Brittney Taylor is leading the Lumberjacks in scoring at 17.7 ppg (second in the CCAA), is shooting .519 from the field (second in the CCAA) and has grabbed 7.0 rebounds per outing. Bree Halsey is the squad’s top rebounder, fourth in the conference, at 9.6 rpg and is averaging 9.2 points per contest. Andrea Bobic is at 12.0 points per game (ninth in the CCAA), Paige Peterson is averaging 10.1 points and 3.8 assists (second in the CCAA). ... The Jacks rank in the top-five of 14 statistical categories including No. 1 in assists (15.7 pg), 3-point field goal percentage (.346) and total 3-pointers made (120).
San Francisco State Notes
The Gators (8-13, 4-9 CCAA) have dropped four of their last five conference games and are in ninth place in the CCAA. Last week they lost a pair of road games. On Friday they were in Turlock and fell to Cal State Stanislaus 53-48. Then on Saturday, they were beaten by Chico State 49-43 in Chico. The SFSU offense is led by senior forward Donisha Tate (11.2 ppg, 11.5 rpg, 1.3 apg) and junior center Dominque Hunter (7.9 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 1.3 apg. As a team San Francisco State is averaging 56.2 ppg while allowing 57.0. They are shooting .382 from the field. … Joaquin Wallace is in his fifth season as head coach of the Gators. His overall record entering this year was 36-68.
Cal State Monterey Bay Notes
The Otters (12-5, 8-5 CCAA) have split their last six match-ups and occupy fourth place in the conference. On Friday, Jan. 29, they traveled to and lost at Chico State 71-44. On Saturday they were in Turlock where they defeated Cal State Stanislaus 64-52. CSUMB is averaging 63.5 points per game while allowing 59.8 and is shooting .368 from the field. The Otters are led by two players who are scoringin double figures; senior forward Veronica Williams (11.6 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 1.0 spg) and senior gruard Helen Suarez (11.3 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 2.4 apg). Junior forward Julie Heurung is the team’s top rebounder at 6.9 per game.... Renee Jimenez is in her second season as the head coach at Cal State Monterey Bay. Last year she led the Otters to an 11-15 record.

“San Francisco State wants to keep the score low and they defend very well. On offense they really take their time and try to lower the number of possessions in a game. We want to be active on defense and not get lulled to sleep by the pace. If we can force some turnovers that will allow us to get out on the break and keep the tempo were we want to play. We also need to be to be very good on the boards. They are a good rebounding team and if we don’t secure the ball on rebounds then we can’t run in transition.” … “ (Cal State) Monterey Bay is a good team and we were happy to get out of their place with a win earlier in the season. They really want to run. They play fast, wanting to get up and down the court, similar to what we want to do. They have athletic guards who can penetrate. We need to do a good job of keeping them in front of us and limiting those drives to the hoop. We like to play the same style as them we just need to make sure that we get the stops on the defensive end.” … “Last weekend was huge for us. (Cal State) Dominguez (Hills) and (Cal State) LA don’t have great records. Those are the types of games that scare you the most. Anytime you can get a road sweep, against any opponents in the CCAA, it is a big deal. Andrea Bobic, even when she is not shooting well, she is doing other things to help us. I think her play is getting better and better and we will need that senior leadership as we head down the stretch.” … “I’m not big on milestones (in regard to my 100th win at HSU). The players were real excited, which was neat.”
