CHICO — Freshman Heather Snyder got Humboldt State’s women off to a strong start at the California Collegiate Athletic Association Track and Field Championships, placing second in the discus with a throw of 135 feet, 10 inches on Friday.
In the men’s events, HSU’s Brian Belue helped out his tea with a third-place finish in the men’s decathlon, totaling 6,339 points in the two-day event, and Bryan Willkomm scored in the men’s hammer finals, finishing fourth with a season-best throw of 163-3.
Also scoring points for the Jacks in the decathlon was Kris Sulonen, who completed the event with a season-best 5,732 points.
Qualifying for Saturday’s finals with strong showing in the preliminaries Friday were Hsu’s Irene Graham, who raced a season-best time of 4 minutes, 53.78 seconds in the 1,500 meters, and Olivia Juarez, who clocked 60.86 seconds in the 400 meters.
For the HSU men, William Burgess advanced to the finals with a time of 15.59 seconds in the 110 high hurdles.
A handful of other finals were scheduled for Friday, some of those moved to Saturday because of windy and wet weather. The majority of the finals that will determine team placement will be held Saturday, concluding in the evening.
