ARCATA — The Jacks head out on the road this week seeking redemption for a pair of volleyball losses suffered earlier this season.  On Friday the squad is in Turlock to take on the Warriors of Cal State Stanislaus.  First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.  On Saturday HSU is in Chico for a 7 p.m. match against the Chico State Wildcats.

Head-to-Head

Humboldt State commands a 44-11 lead in its historical series against Cal State Stanislaus, including two five-set victories in 2008. This season it was the Warriors who claimed the win in three straight on Oct. 2. …One of the Jacks' greatest traditional rivals, Chico State trails HSU, 23-32 in the all-time series. The Wildcats have had the better of recent action, however, winning in four sets earlier this season and both matches in three straight last year.

Woodstra’s Comments

“(Cal State) Stanislaus had a really good win on Saturday night against (Cal State) East Bay.  They came back from two sets down to win the match.  They have played much stronger in the second half of the conference schedule and I think it will be a real battle.  They always play strong at home.” … “Chico State’s outside hitters are good. They have a lot of youth on their team, but if we play the way I know we can then we will be right in the middle of that match.  We need to be efficient, take care of the ball and serve effectively.” … “What we have seen throughout the season has been growth in different areas and by different people.  We are young so it is not always there at the same time.  We are not consistent with it yet. We need to be more consistent in applying the tactics that we work on in practice in the matches.” … “I was pleased with our serving in the Chico State match.  Serving is what gets us into matches.  If we would have had two or three more plays in each of those games we could have come away with a win.”

Lumberjack Notes

Oceana Matsuba leads the Jacks attack with 280 kills for an average of 2.77 per set.  Danielle Wells is averaging 1.97 kills per set and has a total of 173 on the season.  …Allison Drobish’s 92 blocks is tops on the team and she is averaging 0.91 per set.  Wells is blocking at a 0.92/set clip and has 82 total for the season. …Emily Nuss is averaging 3.66 digs/set with a total of 370 followed by Dani Nelson with 316 and an average of 3.13/set.

Cal State Stanislaus Notes

The Warriors (9-17, 3-15 CCAA) dropped a pair of matches in straight sets at Chico State and against UCSD before defeating Cal State East Bay 3-2 last week. …CSUS is led in kills and digs by Lianne Vicchio.  She is averaging 3.29 kills and 2.85 digs/set for the year.  Her total of 313 kills and 271 digs also lead the team.  Melissa Bishop is the top blocker for CSUS with a 0.80 average per set. …Christina Lore is in her fourth season as head coach. …The Warriors defeated the Jacks, 3-0, on Oct. 3 in Lumberjack Arena.

Chico State Notes

The Wildcats (21-7, 12-6 CCAA) posted a 2-1 record last week.  They downed Cal State Stansilaus and Cal State East Bay in straight sets before falling to UCSD in three.  All three matches were contested in Chico. …Makenzie Snyder is averaging 4.71 kills/set with a total of 471 for the year. …Gillian Heydorff has a total of 356 digs and leads the team with 3.71/set. …Blocking for Chico is led by Jacqueline Johnson at 0.39/set. … Chico State is led by seventh-year head coach Cody Hein. …On Oct. 2 the Wildcats defeated the Jacks, 3-1 in Lumberjack Arena.
