Humboldt State began the 2003 season with a brand new field, the first on-campus field the program has seen. Just outside the Fieldhouses north wall, construction began on the HSU Softball Field in the spring of 2002.
Danco Builders began the dugout work in January 2003 and continued to work on the fencing and other refinement, with the field ready for the Lumberjack’s home opener on Feb. 23, 2003.
“Danco Builders, along with Dan and Bobbie Monahan, have taken on a major commitment to make this dream possible,” head coach Frank Cheek said. “Also, the HSU administration played a major role in facilitating this new field, making funds available for the completion.
“It’s a beautiful back setting, one of the prettiest settings for a softball field, if not the prettiest on the West Coast in Division II,” said Cheek.
Other additions to the field include a soreboard that will be donated by Pepsi and installed by Danco Builders, the necessary equipment to maintain the infield, which was bought with HSU athletic monies and a storage shed that was made available through Grace Construction and Jim Douglas to store the portable softball field fence that will be used for games throughout the season. Other recent donations include a tarp to cover the infield, donated by the Humboldt Area Foundation HSU Women’s Athletic Fund and the Humboldt Area Foundation Partain fund, and bleachers to be donated by Danco Builders.
“The new softball field will enable HSU softball players to walk to and from the softball field to their classes which will enhance the program in conjuction with the new locker room area that opened (in the winter of 2003),” Cheek said.
